Here is an excerpt of the book

FSA (Flexible Spending Account)

An FSA is considered additional health insurance people can use to cover additional costs for their medical care. At the beginning of the year, you will choose how much your employer can take out of your paychecks each month. There are different amounts you can choose from.

Each time you have a medical expense that is not covered by your health insurance fully, you can fill out some paperwork and you will be reimbursed from the account you have created. It is still your money, but it is put aside for medical costs.

This plan is great for those who have children that will need braces, or other medical procedures. Additional benefits:

  • This is not considered taxable income, but spent income. You get more money back on your tax return each year.

  • These plans are useful if your health insurance is not going to cover expenses such as dental expenses, or hospital care extended stay expenses.

  • People who use this plan see it as additional coverage to the cut costs of health insurance. If you have to pay a deductible that is very high, you can use your FSA to pay that deductible.

There are some drawbacks to this plan, however.

If you put aside too much money, you will lose it at the end of the year and there is always paperwork involved.

But by making a list of the expenses you have this year and are anticipating next year, you will be able to estimate how much you will need in the account. Keep in mind that the money will be coming out of your paycheck. It is important to have budget ready so that you will not miss the money that will be going into the account.
